if you have never made butter, you need to. you will thank me later.
you need:
- 1/2 cup or more of heavy cream
- lidded jar at least twice the size of the amount of cream you are using
- several butter-loving people with decent upper body strength and/or enthusiasm
- time (music helps, too - butter dance party, anyone?)
pour the cream into your jar and screw on the lid. shake. and shake. and when you are tired of shaking, pass it onto the next person to shake. and shake. and so on. eventually, there will no longer be any sloshing inside the jar. for fun, unscrew the lid -
hey presto! you made whipped cream! ok, take a taste. yum, right?
ok, eye on the prize, betty sue. screw the lid back on and keep shaking. it feels like nothing is happening, i know. keep shaking. and shaking. pass to the next person and repeat. eventually (yes, i realize i keep saying eventually but it's the right word for the situation) you will hear a whonking thud-like sound in the jar as you shake. look at it -
yellow blob of buttery goodness!
open the jar and see the golden buttery blobules in a pool of buttermilk :) pour off the buttermilk and save for later use, then give the butter a stir with a knife or spoon to release any lingering liquid. this is a good time to add a pinch of salt it you like. taste. go on, enjoy it. you burned at least enough calories shaking to balance out a taste. transfer it to a bowl and save it for dinner.
yeah right.
now jump into your time machine and go back several hours and bake some bread. if you haven't got a time machine a hay-time-machine will do (sorry, couldn't resist), i am most certain you will be able to find excuses to eat all of it that day. just saying. xoxo
