Haim

The thing I remember most about when Corey Haim died, was Corey Feldman. The two Coreys had a run as teen movie stars in the 80’s and were on the “comeback” trail with their TV show. Well, Corey Haim sadly, suddenly died and a devastated Cory Feldman was left behind. What I remember is an anguished Feldman taking to the internet and expressing how much he will miss Haim, and that there will now be no one to do the secret Corey handshake with anymore. This is the part that really got me. I spent the better part of the next hour trying to imagine what this secret Cory handshake involved. Was it a series of elaborate hand slaps and Bro chest bumps? Did it incorporate some of the dance moves Feldman might have picked up from his days with Michael Jackson? Were there secret 80’s movie trivia references? The possibilities were endless. And they haunted me. Then I decided, like Haim himself, maybe the secret Cory handshake should Rest In Peace.
Haim (no relation to Corey) are Este, Danielle and Alana Haim, a trio of young sisters out of Los Angeles, and you are going to be seeing a lot of them in the near future. Haim Started out playing with their guitar and drum playing Mom and Dad doing classic rock covers on the festival circuit. Now, the kids are alright and out on their own with a new folk swing coming at you. They combine the harmonies of a Wilson Phillips with production somewhere between Bjork and Thriller-era MJ. All that, and they photograph cooler than anybody who doesn’t have a guy named Casablancas in their band. Enjoy the video for “Forever” -
Trust me, more stuff is definitely on the way from this band, but for right now their three song EP Forever is all we have. When trying to download the album, I found out that there is apparently a difference between iTunes USA and the UK version the ep is available on. It must be tied up in all that high finance pounds conversion and such. So, unless you happen to be in the United Kingdom (and just wearing the monacle and the fake funny accent was not enough to fool iTunes), the only real place to check out these songs is on their facebook page. They are doing a lot of live shows and have added drummer Dash Hutton into the mix to bring out more of the rock and roll elements. Check out a live version of “Better Off” -
It will be interesting to hear a whole album from Haim. Is it highly polished/produced pop? Yeah it is. And you know what? There is nothing wrong with that, and these three songs are better than most of that stuff that is out there right now. It also has just enough weight and depth underneath the surface to keep Haim from mmm-bopping their way out the door. Girls just wanna have fun, so stop being so cynical and just enjoy it.
