their teacher asked if i had a minute to come into class the other day so someone could show me something. my girly took me by the hand, leading me down the hallway and into their empty classroom. and then she proceeded to read a poem to me. a long poem, at that. not just a word here or there, not something she had memorized, but she really read! even used one of those hand pointers to indicate each syllable. i could hardly contain myself with excitement - when she was done i grabbed her and squeezed her so tight - it was one of those hugs to remember, you know? and when we came home, she proceeded to dig out every reader we have in the house and pour through the pages, reading about princesses and dinosaurs and tea parties and monkey bars. there are no photos because i completely forgot everything else and just soaked it all in, which is the best way to remember it, after all. somebody is a reader now. wow.

one of the best parts of the entire experience is that my other girly stood beside her in their classroom as she read that first poem, beaming with pride for her sister. and she sat beside her on the couch during our extended reading session that afternoon, celebrating her accomplishment after each story, "sissy! you can read!" awesome awesome awesome.
then yesterday after picking up a dozen or so more readers at the library, my other girly quietly sat me down and proceeded to read a little book about kitties. and another. and another. apparently we have two new readers in the house. so very different, so very unique, each so very inspiring in their own way. xoxo
p.s. not for nothing : someone twirled into my studio yesterday, picked up her favorite tiny dish of buttons and jar of threads and proceeded to ask me to please teach her to "sew buttons with thread". are you kidding me?
