forgive me, mamas, for i have sinned.
we did not put in a garden this year. (gasp!)
if you are still with me and haven't permanently taken me off your blog reader, thanks for sticking around. it's a long, boring story - suffice it to say we already have plans drawn up for next year. but as for this year, well we've come up with a wonderful alternative that stimulates our local farmers and economy, and is also a wonderful social learning environment for the girls. (way to spin it, i know.)
twice a week with a $20 budget, the girls and i set off on a fresh produce trip with a challenge to see just how far it can stretch. there's the local saturday market and another trip out to the country mid-week to an amish farm/market. almost always we need to factor in a treat for the littles, thank goodness the honey sticks are only a quarter each. everyone is so nice at both markets and it's magical to experience the harvest each week with the kiddos.
this week, we scored the kale, onions, eggs, fingerlings, raspberries, young broccoli, patty pans, and english peas plus a free bag of mixed greens from the lettuce guy just as the storm rolled in. good thing i had the kale on the menu last night, because a certain pair of sous chefs ate more than half the peas as they were shelling them. though i would have to agree, they are simply scrumptious right out of the pods. hope there are more this week. mal sehen. xoxo
